Zur Vokalquantität in der Mundart der Stadt Zürich

This paper analyses the vowel system of the dialect spoken in the city of Zürich, which shows a systematic use of distinctive length contrasts. In order to ascertain the acoustic correlates of the quantity feature, an experimental study has been done, during which three speakers produced a corpus of carefully designed read speech. The duration of 162 vowels and 162 consonants has been measured, as well as the first two formants of 54 high vowels. The results indicate duration as the only relevant correlate of vowel quantity in this dialect, with a mean V/V: ratio of 0.56. The duration of the following consonants does not vary significantly, nor are there any striking spectral differences between short and long high vowels. From a look at some intensity contours it appears that short vowels are not 'cut' - a finding in line with a recent areal typology of German dialects.

Zur Rolle der Dolmetschnotizen beim Konsekutivdolmetschen. Ein Erfahrungsbericht

Der vorliegende Beitrag befasst sich mit der Notizentechnik im Konsekutivdolmetschen und deren Bedeutung als Gedächtnisstütze. Die Autorin diskutiert die Notwendigkeit und Lehrbarkeit dieser Technik, stellt verschiedene methodische Ansätze von namhaften Dolmetschtheoretikern wie Rozan, Seleskovitch und Matyssek vor und betont die Bedeutung von Sinn erfassung, Kompression und individuellen Notationssystemen. Anhand von praktischen Erfahrungen aus der Lehre wird verdeutlicht, warum eine systematische Schulung der Notizentechnik für angehende Dolmetscher essenziell ist, um komplexe Redeinhalte effektiv zu reproduzieren.

„Zitate“ in Schlagzeilen: eine medienlinguistische Untersuchung am Beispiel zweier deutscher Regionalzeitungen

Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert Zitate in Schlagzeilen von Presseartikeln und ihre Relation zu den korrespondierenden Sequenzen im Fließtext. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, die Modifikationen solcher „Zitate“ gegenüber den im Fließtext gegebenen Formulierungen zu erfassen, sie auf der Basis einer fünfstufigen Modifikationsskala einzuordnen und ihre Funktionen an ausgewählten Beispielen aus zwei regionalen deutschen Abonnementzeitungen zu illustrieren.

William Makepeace Thackeray and Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky: Name sensitive Authors. In Homage to Great Novelists

The article features characteristic names, hereinafter referred to as charactonyms, in the works by W.M. Thackeray and F.M. Dostoyevsky. Having studied anthroponyms in the works of these writers, two types of charactonyms have been defined and considered from the perspective of translation - veiled characteronyms and charactonyms personalia, including a subgroup – charactonyms incorporating a characteristic common stem. To study these types of charactonyms the material has been mostly borrowed from the novel The Newcomes and the tale The Rose and the Ring by W.M. Thackeray and their translations into Russian. Names from the works by F.M. Dostoyevsky are also under consideration, especially: Stavrogin from the novel The Demons and Karamazov from the novel The Brothers Karamazov.

"What language does global business speak?" – The concept and development of BELF

This paper focuses on the development of the concept of BELF, which originally stood for “Business English as Lingua Franca”, but later we have used the abbreviation to refer to “English as Business Lingua Franca”. With this change we want to emphasize the domain of use rather than the type of English. The concept of BELF originates from two large research projects conducted at the Aalto University School of Business from 2000 to 2009. The projects were inspired by research into English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and, from that perspective, they set on exploring the language and communication practices of internationally operating business professionals. The findings of the projects showed how the domain of business, and particularly its goal-oriented nature, was significant for BELF discourse and for the perceptions of BELF communication of the practitioners themselves. Overall, it can be argued that for BELF speakers, grammatical correctness is not nearly as important as the genre knowledge of their own specific field of expertise, involving a shared understanding of what, why, how and when to communicate. Thus, we argue that professional competence in today’s global business environment involves communication knowhow as an integral element of business knowhow. Further, in an international context, competence in BELF is a necessity.

What exactly is wrong and why? Tutorial Dialogue for Intelligent CALL Systems

The paper introduces DiBEx, a dialogue-based explanation facility designed for Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) systems. Unlike traditional systems that rely on explicit error taxonomies, DiBEx utilizes meta-reasoning to construct an explanation tree based on correct grammatical subtheories. This approach enables anticipation-free error diagnosis. The authors describe how the system engages in a tutorial dialogue with the student, where each step is governed by a specific tutorial strategy and a dynamic user model, aiming to help students self-explain and correct their own errors in language learning tasks.

Wenn viele Wege aus dem Fenster führen - Konzeptuelle Variation im Bereich von Bewegungsereignissen

In diesem Beitrag werden verschiedene Varietäten des Deutschen (Schweizerdeutsche Dialekte und Standardhochdeutsch) hinsichtlich ihrer konzeptuellen und syntaktischen Ausarbeitung von Raumbeschreibungen vergleichend analysiert. Anhand einer Fallstudie einer Bildergeschichte wird untersucht, wie Sprecher unterschiedlicher Dialektregionen ein Ereignis wie den Sturz eines Hundes aus einem Fenster sprachlich konstruieren. Die Untersuchung zeigt erhebliche Variabilität in den sprachlichen Mitteln und deutet auf entsprechende Unterschiede im kognitiven Konstrual des räumlichen Ereignisses hin. Die Daten belegen konsistent, dass schweizerdeutsche Dialekte dazu neigen, den Weg der sich bewegenden Figur detaillierter auszuarbeiten, während Standardsprachsprecher eher generische und syntaktisch einfachere Konstruktionen verwenden, was auf eine Mikrotypologie der räumlichen Semantik hindeutet.
