Advances in Discrete Differential Geometry

In this book we take a closer look at discrete models in differential geometry and dynamical systems. The curves used are polygonal, surfaces are made from triangles and quadrilaterals, and time runs discretely. Nevertheless, one can hardly see the difference to the corresponding smooth curves, surfaces, and classical dynamical systems with continuous time. This is the paradigm of structure-preserving discretizations. The common idea is to find and investigate discrete models that exhibit properties and structures characteristic of the corresponding smooth geometric objects and dynamical processes. These important and characteristic qualitative features should already be captured at the discrete level. The current interest and advances in this field are to a large extent stimulated by its relevance for computer graphics, mathematical physics, architectural geometry, etc.

Applied Discrete Structures

Applied Discrete Structures is designed for use in a university course in discrete mathematics spanning up to two semesters. Its original design was for computer science majors to be introduced to the mathematical topics that are useful in computer science. It can also serve the same purpose for mathematics majors, providing a first exposure to many essential topics. We embarked on this open-source project in 2010, twenty-one years after the publication of the 2nd edition of Applied Discrete Structures for Computer Science in 1989. We had signed a contract for the second edition with Science Research Associates in 1988 but by the time the book was ready to print, SRA had been sold to MacMillan. Soon after, the rights had been passed on to Pearson Education, Inc. In 2010, the long-term future of printed textbooks was uncertain. In the meantime, textbook prices (both printed and e-books) had increased and a growing open source textbook movement had started.

Book Description: This book is intended to provide concise and complete instructions on how to use different SageMath functions to solve problems in Discrete Mathematics. The goal is to streamline the learning process, helping students focus more on mathematics and reducing the friction of learning how to code. This book was written by undergraduate students at Wright College who were enrolled in my Math 299 class, Writing in the Sciences. For many years, I have been teaching Discrete Math using the open source mathematical software SageMath. Despite the fabulous capabilities of this software, students were often frustrated by the lack of specific documentation geared towards beginning undergrad students in Discrete Math.
