When I was a boy, I associated Gdańsk with a big city with a harbour and shipyards. I knew it was the place where World War II began. I had also heard that Gdańsk had a lot of historical monuments. That was as much as I knew back then. In the late spring of 1967, I got on a train and left for the seaside. I got off at the Gdańsk Main Railway Station. A moment later, I met a friend from back home who talked me into working at the Shipyard. It was in Gdańsk that I met my wife Danuta, it was here that our children were born... And so I became a Gdańsker by choice. Today, after many years, when I have got to know many cities in Europe and throughout the world, I can say that I would never swap Gdańsk for any New York, Paris, Brussels, Tokyo or Moscow. Towards the end of the 20th century, Poland gave Europe and the world Pope John Paul II. Gdańsk, in turn, gave its country, but also Europe and the world, Solidarity. Nothing greater could happen to us, the contemporaries, and to our posterity.
