Micro- and Macro-Properties of Solids

This book deals with some micro and macroproperties of solids. Microproperties are perceived at the lattice level and are generally studied by diffraction or spectroscopic methods. The lattice constant, its temperature variation (measured through the property of thermal expansion), the amplitudes of atomic thermal vibrations (reflected in the Debye–Waller factor) and the colour centres are some examples of microproperties. In contrast, macroproperties are studied through measurements on material in bulk. Elastic properties, hardness, dielectric properties and melting temperature are examples of macro-properties.

METHODS FOR SOLVING MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS PROBLEMS

The authors have tried to select for the book methods that have become classical and generally accepted. However, some of the current versions of these methods may be missing from the book because they require special knowledge. The book is of the handbook-teaching type. On the one hand, the book describes the main definitions, the concepts of the examined methods and approaches used in them, and also the results and claims obtained in every specific case. On the other hand, proofs of the majority of these results are not presented and they are given only in the simplest (methodological) cases.

METHODS FOR SOLVING INVERSE PROBLEMS IN MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS

The theory of inverse problems for differential equations is being extensively developed within the framework of mathematical physics. In the study of the so-called direct problems the solution of a given differential equation or system of equations is realised by means of supplementary conditions, while in inverse problems the equation itself is also unknown. The determination of both the governing equation and its solution necessitates imposing more additional conditions than in related direct problems. The sources of the theory of inverse problems may be found late in the 19th century or early 20th century. They include the problem of equilibrium figures for the rotating fluid, the kinematic problems in seismology, the inverse Sturm-Liuville problem and more. Newton’s problem of discovering forces making planets move in accordance with Kepler’s laws was one of the first inverse problems in dynamics of mechanical systems solved in the past. Inverse problems in potential theory in which it is required to determine the body’s position, shape and density from available values of its potential have a geophysical origin. Inverse problems of electromagnetic exploration were caused by the necessity to elaborate the theory and methodology of electromagnetic fields in investigations of the internal structure of Earth’s crust

THEORETICAL MECHANICS

In this chapter we shall deal with the study of the motion of the non deformable bodies, namely of the rigid bodies. We have seen in the previously chapters that in the study of the motion we have to answer to two questions (which will remain the same for the bodies) namely: which is the position of the body in any instant of the motion and how is performed its motion? The rigid body may be considered (we have seen this propriety in the first part of this mechanics) as a non deformable and continuous system of particles. At the limit the number of these particles tends to infinity.

Mechanics of Materials

The main objective of a basic mechanics course should be to develop in the engineering student the ability to analyze a given problem in a simple and logical manner and to apply to its solution a few fundamental and well-understood principles. This text is designed for the first course in mechanics of materials—or strength of materials—offered to engineering students in the sophomore or junior year. The authors hope that it will help instructors achieve this goal in that particular course in the same way that their other texts may have helped them in statics and dynamics. To assist in this goal, the seventh edition has undergone a complete edit of the language to make the book easier to read.
