Cost studies of buildings. Fourth edition

There has, more recently, been the shift to couple the cost analysis of the product of construction with a cost examination of the process of construction. The late Professor Dennis Harper’s book The Process and the Product (1990) considered these two fundamental aspects of the construction of buildings. The Rethinking Construction Movement and associated industry innovations have challenged the process and management of construction in order to offer the clients of the industry improved added value possibilities.

Architecture beyond Architecture

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture marks its triennial award programme with this book. The vision of His Highness the Aga Khan, and the spirit of excitement that the programme engendered when it was founded are described here in an essay by Renata Holod, who was the first Convenor of the Award, a position later titled Secretary Gen- eral. Over the years, many steering committees have guided the Award and have shaped its growth and development, probing the various challenges for architecture in Muslim societies through seminars and publications. The present Secretary General Suha Özkan and his predecessor Saïd Zulficar (1981-90), guided an important intellectual and outreach journey for the Award during these years. They also honed and improved the methodology of the Award through their unwavering commitment to quality in the process of nomination, screening and documentation. To all of the Secretariat, espe- cially Suha Özkan and his colleagues Jack Kennedy and Farrokh Derakhshani, we all owe a debt of gratitude.

Details in contemporary architecture

Popular interest in architecture and the celebrity of architects has intensified in this media saturated age, but serious publications devoted to architecture are disappearing, while the quality of many that remain has declined. At a time when new knowledge and innovation are more important than ever, architects have fewer opportunities for intellectual exploration. Details in Contemporary Architecture is the first issue of AsBuilt, a new series from Princeton Architectural Press dedicated to formal and material innovation in architecture and the application of new technologies and materials. AsBuilt will present original solutions to problems of architectural detailing that demonstrate how complicated design problems have been handled by prominent architects, as well as those beginning their careers, to achieve beautiful, functional, and, where necessary, economical results. AsBuilt is dedicated to the proposition that architects learn best from other architects. Regularly calling attention to the details that go into works of contemporary architecture that are outstanding examples of art and technology will contribute to the creation of better buildings and strengthen the understanding and influence of architecture in society at large.
