Общая история зодчества, эволюция архитектурно-художественного образа, закономерности развития архитектуры, – все эти проблемы являются предметом исследований, успех которых определяется результатами, получаемыми при изучении памятников архитектурной археологии или археологической архитектуры. В Средней Азии изучение архитектуры качественно изменилось лишь в послереволюционное время – во второй половине 20-30-х гг., благодаря раскопкам архитектурных памятников, осуществленным В.Л.Вяткиным и М.Е.Массоном. Позднее, в 1945 г. на I Всесоюзном археологическом совещании в Москве было верно отмечено, что «подлинная и полная история древнерусской национальной архитектуры может быть лишь результатом археологического раскрытия ее памятников и их реконструкции»1. Этот тезис идентичен истории в изучении архитектуры Средней Азии, где работали такие известные историки архитектуры, как М.С.Булатов, В.Л.Воронина, В.Л.Лавров, В.А.Нильсен, В.И.Пилявский, Г.А.Пугаченкова, С.Г.Хмельницкий, Л.Л.Гуревич, которые приняли не только дефиницию «археологическая архитектура», но и разработали методику ее изучения применительно к Средней Азии

Известным живописцем-акварелистом середины XIX века был и Эдуард Петрович (Иванович) Гау. Уроженец прибалтийского города Ревеля (ныне Таллина) учился в Академии художеств в Дрездене (1830—1832). В 1838 году Э. Гау получил от Императорской Академии художеств звание неклассного художника. Стал известным своими строгими акварельными изображениями интерьеров Эрмитажа и Зимнего дворца, которые представляли и представляют большую ценность для истории русской культуры. Перечислим некоторые из них: Парадная лестница в Эрмитаже, Зал испанской школы (оба — 1853), Перспективный вид залы русской школы в императорском Эрмитаже (1855), Кабинет Александры Федоровны (1858), Галерея 1812 года, Кабинет итальянских школ (оба — 1860), Зимний дворец. Петровский зал (1863), Вид кабинета Марии Николаевны в Зимнем дворце, Мавританский зал (оба — 1864), Фельдмаршальский зал (1866) и другие. Еще в 1854 году Э.
