China and India in Central Asia : a new “great game”?

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the rediscovery of Central Asia by the inter-national community has placed this region in a specific intellectual context, one marked by a return of geopolitical theories and debates around the “end of history” and the “clash of civilizations.” The revival of geopolitical theory, especially Sir Halford Mackinder’s idea that one who controls the Heartland controls the world, has profoundly shaped the new frameworks applied to the post-Soviet states of Central Asia and to Afghanistan. In contrast to the geo-graphical and economic isolation of the region, theories about the revival of the Silk Road flourished in the West and in Asia.

Practical Precision Livestock Farming

Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies have been heavily promoted in the past, but the implementation of these technologies is not easy. Numerous technical challenges need to be solved before PLF technologies will supply the desired information in a reliable and consistent way. Farm implementations regularly encounter difficulties. The practical experience associated with these technologies do not always match their theoretical potential. 93 authors from 16 countries were asked to report on the actual practical experiences technology developers and users had under farm conditions to try and understand this difference between practice and theory. This book aims to eliminate the ‘mystery'behind the ‘Smart'PLF tools, and presents the hard facts reported by individuals that have practical experience using these technologies. The book also explores various aspects of PLF, including the (1) challenges associated with developing and using various technologies, (2) the importance of training and ethical aspects of PLF tools, and (3) the difficulties related to commercialisation of PLF systems. We hope that the honest presentation of the pros and cons of PLF management tools will help the supporters of precision farming to better use and interact with modern technologies, and thus sustain viable livestock production worldwide.

Plasma Agriculture: Oxygen Plasma Effects on Garlic

Garlic is popular, versatile, and tasty. The Allium crop is beloved worldwide as a food, spice and herbal remedy, but is also widely researched and used in disciplines ranging from medicine to farming. However, what if the growth and yield of garlic could be influenced simply by physically treating its cloves? This is the principle behind plasma agriculture, an emerging field of science which introduces physical concepts to agricultural practice. Here, seeds or other plant materials are briefly exposed to gas plasma, which alters the surface properties, stimulates the growth and strengthens the plant.This book takes an in-depth look at the physics of low-pressure oxygen plasma and shows how the plasma reactive species affect the treated surface. It uses garlic as a model organism to explain the main principles underlying plasma agriculture.
