An introduction to the theory of formal languages and automata

In the latter half of the 1950’s, Noam Chomsky began to develop mathematical models for the description of natural languages. Two disciplines originated in his work and have grown to maturity. Th fist of these is the theory of formal grammars, a branch of mathematics which has proven to be of great interest to information and computer sciences. Th second is generative, or more specifially, transformational linguistics. Although these disciplines are independent and develop each according to its own aims and criteria, they remain closely interwoven. Without access to the theory of formal languages, for example, the contemporary study of the foundations of linguistics would be unthinkable.

Put simply this b o ok is the result of a series of emails sent back and forth b etween the two authors during the development of a library for the .NET framework of the same name (with the omission of the subtitle of course!). The conversation started off something like, “Why don’t we create a more aesthetically pleasing way to present our pseudo co de?” After a few weeks this new presentation style had in fact grown into pseudo co de listings with chunks of text describing how the data structure or algorithm in question works and various other things ab out it. At this p oint we thought, “What the heck, let’s make this thing into a b o ok!” And so, in the summer of 2008 we b egan work on this b o ok side by side with the actual library implementation.
