Aortic Surgery

This book distinguishes itself from other major oncology texts in that it is not designed to be encyclopedic but distills the most important information that should be known by those interested in surgical oncology. It is therefore approachable and readable. It should be able to be read during the length of a rotation on a surgical oncology service. Chapters are arranged by organ of involvement. The chapters are designed with a common theme arranged in a practical fashion. Each chapter begins with defining the scope of the particular problem and includes incidence, risk factors for development of disease, and methods for screening. This is followed by methods of diagnosis, preoperative evaluation, and staging. Treatment options are defined for the most common, treatable presentation of the disease. Clearly stated treatment outcomes are presented including survival and important immediate and long term side effects. Guidelines for posttreatment surveillance are also presented. Important aspects of Radiation and Systemic therapy are covered in separate chapters.

Start with a discussion to set the context. See how many words the students already know. Read through the words carefully for pronunciation practice. Play a 'Can you tell me number 4 please?' Game around the group.(The 'please' is important !) Encourage learners to use three different colours to underline /colour code the words into categories. (This has much more impact than just underlining them in biro!) Students write the words in the Category 'shapes'. Each student chooses 3 words (secretly) and puts them into sentences (or a little story). The other students listen hard to identify the 'special' words. Brainstorm some more words for each category.
